Main uses

Plasticizers
The largest use is producing phthalate esters (e.g., DOP/DEHP) that soften PVC and other polymers.
Alkyd and unsaturated polyester resins
Used in alkyd coatings, unsaturated polyester resins for FRP, gels and paints.
Dyes, pigments and pharma
Serves as an intermediate for dyes, pigments, benzoic acid and pharmaceutical actives.

Production methods

Phthalic Anhydride is made by catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of o-xylene (or naphthalene) over vanadium-based catalysts, then condensation and distillation.
