Main uses

Neopentyl glycol
A major route converts isobutyraldehyde to neopentyl glycol via aldol condensation and hydrogenation, used in polyester resins.
Isobutyric acid and derivatives
Oxidation yields isobutyric acid for esters, flavors, pharmaceuticals and rubber chemicals.
Pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals
Serves as a building block for active ingredients and specialty intermediates.

Production methods

Isobutyraldehyde is co-produced with n-butyraldehyde by hydroformylation (oxo process) of propylene using cobalt or rhodium catalysts, then separated by distillation.
