EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is one of the main products of Shanghai Haihai Zhonglong Technology Co., Ltd., terpolymerized from ethylene, propylene and a small amount of non-conjugated diene. It offers excellent ozone, weathering, heat and electrical insulation resistance, and is widely used in automotive weatherstrips, waterproofing membranes, wires & cables and door/window seals.

Physical Properties

EPDM is polymerized from ethylene, propylene and a small amount of non-conjugated diene; its saturated main chain gives outstanding weather resistance.


  • Excellent weather and ozone resistance
    The saturated main chain resists ozone, UV and aging, suitable for long-term outdoor use.
  • Wide temperature range
    Wide service temperature range with good low-temperature flexibility and heat resistance, usable from -50°C to 150°C.
  • Good electrical insulation
    Excellent dielectric properties, suitable for wire & cable sheathing and insulators.
  • Easy to fill and color
    Low density, high filler loading and stable color, cost-effective and easy to color.
  • Ordinary oil resistance
    Not oil or non-polar solvent resistant; for oil resistance use NBR etc.

    With excellent insulation and heat resistance, EPDM is used for cable sheaths, insulation layers and mining cables.

    Used for radiator hoses, HVAC hoses and general industrial weather-resistant rubber goods.
Processing & Application

(1) Mixing: Mix EPDM with vulcanizing agents (peroxide or sulfur), accelerators and reinforcing fillers; due to high saturation, choose a suitable vulcanization system.


(2) Forming: By extrusion, compression or continuous vulcanization, suitable for long articles like door seals and pipes.


(3) Vulcanization: Commonly peroxide or continuous salt-bath/microwave vulcanization; control temperature for complete cross-linking.


(4) Inspection and packaging: Inspect weather resistance, hardness and dimensions, then package and store in a dry ventilated place.


Precautions

(1) Safety warning: EPDM itself is low-toxicity and safe; but fumes from mixing and vulcanization and the peroxide system require standardized operation, avoiding skin contact with uncured compound.


(2) Storage: Store in a cool, dry, ventilated warehouse, avoiding direct sunlight and high temperature; although weather resistant, raw rubber is best kept sealed and away from light.


(3) Fire fighting: Combustible rubber; use dry powder, foam or carbon dioxide; peroxides decompose on heating, so control temperature in storage and firefighting.


(4) Personal protection: Operators wear dust masks, gloves and goggles, keeping exhaust in vulcanization areas.
