Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR)
Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR)

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) is one of the main products of Shanghai Haihai Zhonglong Technology Co., Ltd., copolymerized from butadiene and acrylonitrile. It features outstanding oil resistance, abrasion resistance and air tightness, and is widely used in oil seals, O-rings, hoses, conveyor belts and oil-resistant products.

Physical Properties

Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is copolymerized from butadiene and acrylonitrile; the acrylonitrile content determines the balance between oil resistance and low-temperature flexibility.

  • Excellent oil resistance
Higher acrylonitrile content gives better oil and fuel resistance, making it a core material for oil-resistant seals.
  • Abrasion and aging resistance
Good abrasion resistance, compression set and aging resistance, with long service life.
  • Good gas tightness
Better gas barrier than most general rubbers, suitable for seals and linings.
  • Strong adhesion
Good bonding with metal and fiber, convenient for composites and rubber-metal parts.
  • Ordinary weather/ozone resistance
Not ozone or UV resistant; often blended or with antioxidants and protective wax.
Main Applications

With outstanding oil resistance, NBR is widely used in automotive, petroleum and industrial oil-resistant parts:

  • Oil-resistant Seals.png
    Automotive Oil Seals & O-rings
NBR is the mainstream material for engine oil seals, O-rings and crankshaft seals, with excellent resistance to mineral oil and grease.
  • Oil-resistant Hoses.png
    Oil-resistant Hoses & Fuel Lines
Used for fuel hoses, hydraulic hoses and oil transfer hoses, stable in oil media long-term.
  • Oil-resistant Gloves.png
    Oil-resistant Gloves & Industrial Goods
NBR oil-resistant gloves are widely used in petrochemical, machinery and cleaning; also for rollers and linings.
  • Adhesives.png
    Adhesives and Printing Rollers
With its adhesion and oil resistance, NBR is used for oil-resistant adhesives, printing rollers and paper-industry parts.
Processing & Application

(1) Mixing: Mix NBR with vulcanizing agents, accelerators, antioxidants, reinforcing fillers and plasticizers; high-acrylonitrile grades have lower tack and may need process adjustment.

(2) Forming: By compression, extrusion or injection molding; NBR is easy to process, suitable for complex oil-resistant parts.

(3) Vulcanization: Cross-link by vulcanization to obtain oil-resistant elastomer; prevent scorch and control temperature and time.

(4) Inspection and packaging: Inspect oil resistance, hardness and appearance, then package and store in a cool dry place.

Precautions

(1) Safety warning: NBR itself is low-toxicity, but processing fumes and additives may irritate skin and respiratory tract; the nitrile structure produces toxic gases such as hydrogen cyanide when burned, so incomplete combustion is prohibited.

(2) Storage: Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight and ozone sources; keep separate from solvents and oils to prevent swelling contamination.

(3) Fire fighting: Combustible rubber; use dry powder, foam or carbon dioxide; combustion may produce toxic fumes, so firefighters must wear gas masks and stay upwind.

(4) Personal protection: Operators wear dust/toxic masks, oil-resistant gloves and goggles, keeping the workshop well ventilated.
