Methylpropane Diol (MPO, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, CAS: 2163-42-0, formula: C4H10O2, MW: 90.12) is one of the main products of Shanghai Haihai Xinyun International Trade Co., Ltd. It is a colorless low-viscosity liquid mainly used in unsaturated polyester resins, polyurethanes and coatings to improve flexibility and water resistance.

Product Overview

Methylpropane diol (MPO, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol) is a colorless, transparent, low-viscosity, low-toxicity diol. It is miscible with water and most organic solvents, has moderate reactivity, and can partially replace neopentyl glycol (NPG), making it a preferred diol for environmentally friendly resins.

Physical Properties

As a preferred diol for environmentally friendly resins, MPO offers moderate reactivity, low viscosity and good hydrolysis resistance; its main physical properties are:


  • Appearance
    Colorless, transparent, low-viscosity liquid; miscible with water and most organic solvents.
  • Hydroxyl value
    About 760–780 mg KOH/g, providing moderate diol reactivity for polyester and polyurethane synthesis.
  • Boiling point
    Approximately 212–215 °C at atmospheric pressure; high-boiling and low volatility.
  • Density and viscosity
    Density about 1.03 g/cm³ (20 °C); viscosity about 165–185 mPa·s (25 °C), easy to pump and process.
  • Flash point and solubility
    Flash point about 129 °C (PMCC); soluble in water and common organic solvents; control moisture absorption during storage.
Safety Information

(1) Hazard overview: MPO is a low-toxicity, combustible liquid at room temperature, slightly irritating to eyes and skin; large inhalation or ingestion may cause discomfort.

(2) Storage: Store in a cool, ventilated, dry warehouse, away from fire and heat sources; keep containers sealed to prevent moisture absorption; store separately from oxidizers.

(3) First aid: After skin contact, wash with soap and plenty of water; if splashed into eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of running water and seek medical attention; if ingested, rinse mouth, drink plenty of warm water, do not induce vomiting, and seek medical attention promptly.

(4) Fire fighting: Leaks can be collected with sand or inert absorbent; extinguish with water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide; avoid direct water jets that cause splashing.

(5) Personal and environmental protection: Wear protective gloves, goggles and dust/mist masks during operation, keep ventilation; dispose of waste according to local environmental regulations and prevent entry into water bodies.
